Its been done. :-)

I bought a bunch of vertical mount 3.5mm jacks that I've been pondering
doing just this with.  Will be trivial to make a PCBoard to do the wiring.

I know this has been done before, Steve Thomas did it and has a really nice
webpage about it.

The jacks I have right now have threaded ferrules but I was thinking of
getting them with smooth ferrules and soldering them to extra heavy PCB
material.

Anyhow, its one of the many things simmering in my brain while I finish
getting my CNC router online.
