[sdiy] Substitute for pin matrixes?

hooked up to a micro controller.
Get a circuit board made with a 16 x 16 matrix of copper pads.
Vias connect the pads through the board to traces on bottom layer running to uC
Scan all the pads in a sequence at high frequency like a keypad to 
reduce pins required.
Use a stylus with tip grounded or at VDD to activate the pads.
Also build it with LEDs in the pads so you know which are active.

A fancier version would use cap sense so you could use your finger.

Not a cheap solution but it would be very cool if it worked.
