Here's a brainfart idea for a DEAD CHEAP matrix:
You know those double-row pin headers? You know how they sometimes
short-circuit two adjacent pins with a little thingy?
There's your pin matrix. Each row is a double pin connector of equal
length. One of the two pin rows is connected together. Each upper pin is
hardwired to the corresponding lower pin on the row above. Row-column
connections are made simply by putting one of those short-circuiting doodads
on the row of interest at the column of interest.
Done.
