[sdiy] Substitute for pin matrixes?

A couple of things leap out at me;
One, the crosspoint switch they're using is 8x16, so they're only
using a quarter of it!
Two, it'll handle up to 12V p-p (+/-6V) according to the datasheet.
That sounds like it's not a million miles from synth levels.
