[sdiy] Substitute for pin matrixes?

Here's an off-the-wall and probably totally impractical suggestion: What
about a "binary switch matrix" which only exists as strings of 1- or 2-byte
binary numbers? For example, 1 is an "on" and 0 is an "off", so, say,
01101101 represents a row of 8 switches in various positions. However, this
number can be represented by a two-digit hexadecimal code (in this case, 6D,
if I'm not mistaken). This number could be entered into a hexadecimal
keypad, and the rest is done with analog switches and a bit of digital
circuitry. An 8x8 matrix would require 8 2-digit hex numbers. This would
be a very compact way to create and store patches! They could be stored in
a very small RAM. You could even morph or randomize the patches by applying
various algorithms to the hex numbers.

That's my random thought for the day.
