well, kind of....
The DW and K3 use a bit of both....
I suspect you'll find the 512sample waveform frequency is varied over
a range of notes, maybe an octave or so, then as you get near to the
point at which aliasing would occur (dependant on sample rate), it'll
swap to the 256byte waveform and halve the rate it looks up from the
ROM.
Think of it more like a sampler, with a sample per octave, you use the
same sample over 12 notes, but the 13th is a new sample.
It's actually very easy to do, and is a good way of reducing frequency
mirror aliasing, the problem is two fold, firstly you need a tonne of
storage and secondly you need to spend some time deciding the break
points for each waveform.
