[sdiy] returning to the chronic disappointment of the 1496...

The more time one spends trying to null out the carrier in a
1496, the happier one is to pay $7 for the AD633.

In fact, I felt pretty ecstatic each time I soldered one into
the Frostwave blue ringer.. the thing with the AD633 is
that it is so good that the rest of the circuit (oscillator,
power supply, layout) becomes the limiting factor.

I'd be interested to know what Moog use in their ring
modulator effects box. I hope they don't rely on a gate
or expander, because that would be cheating.

Incidentally, it matters whether you use the X or Y inputs
for the carrier - one nulls out slightly better. And while it
is true that an AD633 without nulling ususally beats a
1496 WITH nulling, you stil have to null the AD633 for
anything like acceptable results. In my opinion.

I begrudge my weekly $40 for medical insurance, the $45
grocery/food bill, the $10 clothing allowance - but I feel
privelliged to be able to buy that AD633 for $7.
Truly, these are wonderful days.
