David,

For better or worse, this *is* what is referred to as "digital ring  
mod", probably ever since the Arp Odyssey.

If you think about it, it does make some kind of sense, but you have  
to regard the normal logic levels of "1" and "0" as representing "1"  
and "-1".

Then you get:

1x1 = 1
1x -1 = -1
-1 x 1 = -1
-1 x -1 = 1

Which is definitely an XOR, and also exactly what you'd expect from a  
ring mod. However, you may well be right that you could get much the  
same/an identical effect with audio rate PWM.
