not quite a modular, but one of the guys in wolfeyes has a 3" reel2reel in his suitcase.  i think the mechanicals of getting/keeping the tape heads in alignment would be a lot of trouble... maybe better to keep the original housing and just circuit bend things like vc tape speed...
