What non-DSP/FPGA activity here isn't stoneage?
 
I'd say stoneage digital (variable sample rates, multiplying DACs,
analog feedback paths) is the best in terms of interesting, high
quality sound.  It keeps all the cool artefacts and avoids the 
unpleasant ones.  It doesn't exactly scale well, though...
