[sdiy] Connecting two halves of a case...

Certainly,
For connecting cabinets, I use steel lift off (slip) hinges. That allows me
to latch cabinets together, fold them, separate, etc.
I get them from Hardware Source.

For cabinet power entry, I had some 2"x3" 13Ga steel plates laser cut with
mounting holes for 4-40 screws in each corner and a hole + mounting holes
cut in the center to hold a panel-mount DIN connector. I use the 5-pin DIN
socket for mating with an El Pac wall wart supply connector and 6 pin DIN
socket for power feed output to other cabinets.
I put cables together using the in-line plug versions of the connectors on
each end (1-5 pin, 1-6 pin) and use a 3-conductor, 22AWG cable at whatever
length I need. (Usually, not more than a foot.)
I also had another version of the panel made that has the DIN hole on the
upper half for auxiliary cabinet power feeds and a square hole on the bottom
to snap-in an IEC- 320-C14 power entry: Mouser# 723W-X2/02.

But, since I quit building my own PSU's, I don't use those anymore except
for custom cabs where I install Condors or Power One supplies.

Could you please keep the discussion on the list as I'm currently building
something that will need a similar solution.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi James,
You should email me. That's exactly how I do my cases. :)
I can offer suggestions, references and maybe have access to some parts you
may need.

Hi list,
I've been working on a small portable synth which is housed in a flip
top case (of which both halves contain circuitry) and am a bit stuck on
how to connect them together. I need to connect wires for ±15V, ground
and audio out (mono). I could take it outside or inside the case and it
could be something that I plug in every time I use it or is hard-wired.
Does anyone know of a good way of doing this? Or even a product that is
available from some supplier?
thanks
James
