LOL you guys are doing it all wrong :^)

Get some dirt-cheap crap quality audio gear and upgrade that. THEN you will
hear a difference. The good stuff was always good, sometimes better than what
YOU might use to upgrade it.

I once thought a 4558 was the same as a 1458 (opamp).

My bad...

This has been my experience also, but to be clear, this regards  
passive components (caps, resistors etc.).

In my experience, the selection of active components (op-amps mostly)  
does make a difference if they are in the audio path.

In the specific case sited, replacing already superior performance op- 
amps with even better ones fits the law of decreasing returns.
