Depends what you want... you want to make music ? or you want to learn
for you're education etc..
I'm just starting out as well but I'm a musician and had a lot of synth
experience, I wanted to make a modular to get the real analogue 70's
feeling :-) and use it in my projects.
What you'll basically need as a basic setup :
** Regulated Power supply that gives +15v / -15v (for MOTM synths) or
+12v, 5v, -12v for the eurorack modules
VCO (you're cv source)
Midi to cv (if you want to play it with a keyboard)
a VCA (voltage controller amp)
VCF (voltage controlled filter)
ADSR/envelope generator (attack , delay, sustain, release module)
nice to haves : VCLFO and 2-3 VCO's (gives a lot more punch to you're
sound) .
Don't forget front panels, they're quite expensive... they are other
methods to make it of course (drill holes in aluminium and put a printed
decal on it)...
It also depends a lot on the budget and where you're situated....
a good article that helped me to find my way in the modular maze is the
article you'll find in the 2009 April edition --> Which modular to
choose (or something like that), you can buy it in pdf for 1.5£ .
have fun !
You can mail me in private, I will gladly help you out, I also have a
company and have a lot of electronic parts stocked (maybe i'll open an
sdiy webshop this year)
cheers
