You clearly have never had to deal with equipment used by chain
smokers. The dust bunnies get soaked in this nasty brownish tar and
stick to everything, ruining fans and heatsinks.
And yes, it DOES get into hard drives since there is almost always a
small vent hole. There's a dust filter and silica gel to clean up the
air, but it can't withstand tar. I have seen hard drives that are
internally gummed up from being in a smoke-filled environment for
months.
Residue from tobacco smoke IS toxic. It includes many carcinogens and
other toxins found in tobacco smoke, many of which can be absorbed
through the skin. Many of the harmful substances in tar also outgas
into the atmosphere, exposing others to what is effectively secondhand
smoke.
Apple is 100% right with this policy.
