Hmmmm... I work at a hard disk company, have been for 20 years next month.
Don't recall anyone discussing smoke damaging hard drives - but
I think it is highly likely.  We just have ignored the possiblity or uproar
taking such a position would cause....
The hard drive must be immediately surrounded by a certain
chemical - free environment.  Silicone is one particular nasty one.  Many 
others.
The materials in our external housings are tested against a list
of nasty chemicals so disks are not damaged over time.  Smoke surely will
film over typical key contacts, touch screens, etc. and make them fail.
Jeez you guys know!  How many keyboards have you repaired with smoke
gunk all over everything?
