IMO, it's worth studying what Buchla did along these lines, with the  
291e Triple Morphing Filter. The combo of filters plus fairly  
sophisticated sequencer is really cool. External modulation, the type  
and depth of which is remembered for each step of the sequencer can be  
quite interesting.
