it's also probable in this case that when the jpeg was saved it included the data for a thumbnail image too. I'm not sure about XNview, but I know that photoshop allows you to disable this feature of the jpeg format and some other things. Check to see if there are any options in the save or save as dialog box.

Something's wrong. PostScript has had native support for JPEG
compression for at least 10 years (see DCTdecode in the PostScript
language reference). Looks like xnview has decompressed the JPEG
data and included the resulting image in the output, with no or
inefficient compression.
