Flash RAM?
Do you maybe mean Flash ROM? Flash ROM is not random-access. It uses a paging scheme - you have to erase a sector at a time, then burn data into it, both using a command sequence. Both operations are much slower than a true RAM...but they are indeed nonvolatile, without backup power of any sort.
