I picked up a basic stereo microscope for not many pounds, ideal for  
SMT work, similar to this:

(not exactly this one, I got mine a couple years back, but the same  
basic structure)

The viewing head can swing out over the bench, giving a huge work  
area for hands, iron, tweezers, etc.
