The hakko unit i have has a cylinder, maybee 45mm by 20mm, somthing like that, which catches the molten solder.  It has a bit of
wire 'wool' at the far end, and then a filter pad behind that, and another one at the station end also.

I generally use the device for some time, untill the suction starts to fail.  I then remember that i should have emptied it long
ago, and have to dig about in the collection chamber to take out a sort of termites mound of lead.

I dont know how often i have to empty it, but not that often.  I guess i could probably do 3 or 4 tb-303s worth of tact switches
before i had to empty it.

For the odd component, i generally use braid, or a hand device, as, by the time youve waited for the gun to heat up, you may as well
have done it by hand.  But, for the affore mentioned tact switch jobs, or multiple ics, leds etc. its well worth it.

I bought hakko as one came up 2nd hand, and the uk representative is excellent.
