The drawback of the 3914 is that in dot mode there is some overlap between 
the steps, which makes sequencer, etc, applications problematic.  There is 
a recent thread somewhere where it was proposed to use a priority encoder 
with the 3914 in bar mode.  This might be worth pursuing.
