I think Roland had become famous for its sync sound in the JP8, which is
based on a saw core oscillator. This sounded different from all the
Oberheim and SCI synths, which used the standard sync of the triangle
based core of the CEM3340.

So keeping a saw-core like sync sound was a unique selling point for Roland.
