Even if you have a bunch of chinese workers at hand, e.g. in Behringer
City?

Nice thought, but suggesting commercial stuff to be open source seems
like wishful thinking to me. 
And - firmware, particularly in a dump inhibited micro controller, can
be somewhat of a dongle to prevent hardware copying. You just add some
not so obvious, but crucial operations (that go beyond well known tasks
like pot smoothing), so that simple copying isn't that rewarding anymore,
compared to a system completely developed from scratch.
