Amen to that!
Imagine if John Bowen's Solaris were open source...I'd definitely be  
preordering. The Prophet 08 would be good too, seeing as I've used  
the same processors he uses for the voice. The concept of Open Source  
synth hardware that you could add you own mods to and sort out any  
remaining quirks is really good. Gets around those small development  
teams you mentioned.
I don't see why (for example) DSI would lose anything by opening up  
the operating system/voice code of the Prophet08. If you wanted to  
use the code, you'd still need hardware, and it's easier to buy a  
Prophet rather than design your own.
