Depends on the number of turns/clicks used. 
But generally encoders do require a certain amount of muscle memory.
The user argument one pot one parameter, are a hard one to knock down.

Encoders are cheaper then pots in volumes, also they do
have longer life, turns vs turns, if in the same price range
or even cheaper.

But, this encoder debacle DSI have evolved themselfs in must
have cost a lot, like bags of sour lemons years afterwards and
no place to dump them. (lemons= dissatisfied customers)

Virus (Access) seams to have implemented all kind
of scan principles in their knobbly instruments.
