Given the amount of time I've spent replacing panel pots on various
synths, I'm not surprised that encoders fail too. The question is
"are they much worse?". Or perhaps "are they much worse at a similar
price level?"
I suspect that if you used decent encoders at the same price you'd
pay for decent pots, you might get a similar rotational lifespan. I
haven't checked though, and being wrong when you haven't checked is
not unusual!
Also $400 sounds like a lot for some pots. Can't you just fit some
replacement encoders? That's what everyone would do if they were pots
on an old Prophet.
