I'll admit that I'm getting by with less-than-ideal components in my setup. 
But the main point is that CNC machines capable of considerable accuracy are 
now affordable for individuals. Ten years ago--or even five years ago--this 
sort of hardware was simply out of reach for hobbyists.

Another point is that tools can make more tools--I realized that I needed a 
coil-winding machine to wind custom guitar pickups and solenoids, so I used 
my CNC machine to make the parts for one. It has also dawned on me that I'm 
one stepper motor and a couple of trivial bits of hardware away from having 
a CNC lathe.

I am very much digging living in the future--though I'm still waiting for my 
jetpack, hovercar, and desktop nano-assembler.
