One alternative I've seen on a Boss SE-70 uses an encoder with a 
built-in momentary push switch.  Counts by 1 with the switch out, by 10 
with the switch in.  Very usable encoder interface, and since there's 
only one encoder on the box, not a big expense.  It's good for data 
entry, but not as a performance control.  I haven't priced them, so no 
idea how much of an adder there is.
