One workaround I've played with--and I'm not saying it's ideal--is to use
encoders with integral pushbuttons, and use the "pushed" state to mean
"increment faster". So if you rotate the knob while pushing it at the same
time, the value goes up/down by e.g. 10 rather than 1.
