I use the Oki BVX-101 with the plenum arm extension.
It's quiet(ish) can solder at night without disturbing anybody and I've yet to change the HEPA filter (expensive) after years of moderate use (synth service).
Doesn't take up much space on the bench either.
I paid around 500 bucks for it, ordered through a local electronics store, but the best price I found online is at hmcelectronics in the US.
Btw I used the dryer hose and fan setup for years and it worked well but this Oki is portable -looks like a Darth Vader helmet - no I'm not kidding !
Just make sure when you're ordering to get the correct one, not the one for gas (solvents) but for solder fumes.
I've yet to use it without the plenum arm extension.
This thing has saved my lungs and my furniture from solder fume nasties.
Highly recommended.

However i can't seem to find any in the <$500 price range except the Aoyue 2702A+ which would be awesome except it seems isn't very good... any hints?
