Use an old one as a panpot pickup: you can tack on to the Hall effect
sensots, and use the mangetic outer to operate them. There might be a way of
using the pick up track, (which I think is used to sense velocity), as well.
I've used old disc drive motors as sensors some time ago, most have linear
Hall-effect sensors.

On a similat subject, I wonder if one can make a small polypshase generator
from one? I used an old disc drive stepper, (from a 5.25" drive), as a
generator for and LED/Supercap torch. That gave 4 phases, and generated
enough to keep the LED lit over a minute in a few turns. I think the idea
was in Everyday Electronics here in the UK.
