Consider a bench-top multimeter if they have one. At least it
can be put on a shelf *above* your workbench instead of using up
bench space.
All other things being equal, take one with sane defaults
(voltmeter defaults to DC, not AC, often used modes like
continuity test, ohmmeter and voltage at the near end of the
mode dial, that sort of thing).
Some have hundreds of ms of delay in the continuity tester. This
is more annoying than you can imagine.
Very frequently, the capacitance meter is ridiculously limited
(E.G. only goes up to 20 µF) so watch out for that.
Two LR6 batteries cost less than a 9 V one.
