Novation published a reference for all of the MIDI communication used by the
Launchpad. It transmits note messages when you press its pads, and you can
turn the LEDs on and off (and even set brightness levels) by sending it note

You're right that there has to be a computer in the mix, and that computer
has to be running either OSX or Windows so that it can use Novation's
drivers.
I have a Launchpad and am generally happy with it, but I haven't tried using
it without Live.
