Paul, I didn't want to mention this before out of embarrassment, but my
favorite multimeter is a cheapo Chinese pocket multimeter, a Victor VC921A.
I almost always grab it instead of my "good" one because it's smaller and
more convenient, it has autoscale (no need to switch to different ranges),
and it has a frequency counter which I use to calibrate VCOs. It was a
whopping $25 retail. It doesn't measure current, but the VC920A does:
