My perspective: I work for a company that makes mixed signal (analog plus digital) laser measurement equipment.  I think the cellphone/smartphone business is driving the miniaturization of electronics.

So go ahead and open up a cellphone.  You'll find the resistors are approaching the size of not visible without magnifying eyewear.  Many ICs are nearly 0805 resistor size.  Our circuits, which just 10 years ago would fit on about 50 sq in, are now crammed into 2 sq in. (and extremely challenging to work on).
