Thanks. That 3D picture is nice and unambiguous, and tallies with other responses. Given that diagrams are often a better way of representing information, it's amazing that there so many bad ones!

I'm not wiring up MIDI leads (which is simple enough, since you just go from one pin to the same pin on the other plug, without worrying what they carry). Instead I've done a little PCB which has the standard MIDI sockets on it (In, Out, Thru) with a 6N138 opto and a 74HC14 to drive the thru, plus indicator LEDs. It has one four-pin connector for 0V, +5V, in, and out. I want to get it right so that I never have to think about MIDI sockets ever again, and can just grab a board and connect it directly to my processor.
