If you're just building a MIDI cable of some sorts then you just have to 
make sure you connect all pins straight through. Generally: Pin 5 
carries the data signal, pin 2 is ground, and pin 4 the positive supply 
voltage. Dunno what you mean by front or back. Everything I've seen so 
for is drawn from the side which is visible to the end user, i.e. the 
side where things are connected by cables, not the wiring side.
