To finish the story, I drilled the holes in the panel this morning, and there was no pulling up or fraying of the coating at all. It's as if the Lazertran isn't even there. It's essentially plastic-coated aluminum. This technique is damn-near perfect. I doubt there is a way to get better DIY panels.
