Depends on how old you're talking about.
I use the True-USB Willem programmer(GQ-3X) -- handles EPROMs from 2716
on up, along with a large number of more modern devices.  USB
plug-and-play;  no problems with it after 6 months of use.

Some old synths & drum machines used 2708 devices, for which there is no
alternative but the vintage programmers.
Same for things like the Siel DK600, which used 2532 EPROMs.

If you have the code, it's possible to program info from a 2708 into a
2716;  the 2716 is pin compatible, except for the -5V and +12V lines,
which need to be reconfigured (run the -5 pin to +5V;  run the +12 pin
to ground).  I've done this successfully with a number of old Prophet 5s.
