You can have a closer look at the BCR2000 inside here (not my pics - I don't even have a BCR2000):

And yes these are simple thruhole LEDs...
The guy changes some LED rings to other colors.

Blimey, I thought they go for SMD LEDs and a cheap plastic light-pipe assembly.
