Don't discount AVR either. The cpu is 8 bits, but for such it's quite nice 
and the C support is very good. GCC even seems to generate fairly good 
code. Good enough that I would never write midi parser in asm.

In future projects, my personal choice will be either AVR or PIC24/dsPIC.
