I don't know what's inside the 3340, but since the external transistor pulls
the buffer output down to -5v, and the voltage on the input to the buffer is
usually in the range 0 to +5v, my guess would be that the buffer ceases to
be a buffer, and the charge on the cap flows straight through it to -5v.
