Are the data bytes bad or just missing?

If bad data then there is an electrical problem, bit rate, parity, number of bits... are usually in error. If there are missing bytes then it's more like a timing/polling problem.

Looking at the code I didn't see any of the serial error status bits being read. Read those and check for errors and then display them somehow. Maybe put them out on some LEDs or LCD.
