What kind of harmony are you interested in, John? Counterpoint? Figured
bass? Classical harmony? Romantic harmony? Chromatic harmony? Messiaen's
color chords? 12-tone rows? Jazz harmony? Modal harmony?

It's a big field! If you narrow it down a little bit, I can perhaps make a
recommendation (I have dozens of books on the topic).

However, I can point you to the Advance Music website (English version):

http://www.en.advancemusic.com/dx/public/advance/start.html

I have consistently found their books to be the most enlightening for my
purposes. Click on the "Arranging/Composing/Harmony/Theory" tab, and I'm
sure you will find enough to keep you busy for years!
