Hi John,

I use Tonal Harmony by Stephen Kostka and Dorothy Payne at the
conservatory where I teach. (I'm actually a theory instructor by
trade.) Anyhow, this is the text that is also being used at most of
the colleges in our state.

http://www.amazon.com/Tonal-Harmony-Stefan-Kostka/dp/0072852607/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270911641&sr=8-2

It's generally well written and fairly concise. It also covers a broad
base of topics, and presents part writing in a way that students can
usually remember and execute correctly. The good news is that if you
don't mind a used copy, you can find one for about nine bucks. :-)

Kind regards,

Sam E.
