I don't personally do it myself, but at my former job we used to do
this all the time, but for a different reason.  It was used on the
component side as a cheap form of conformal coating to prevent
humidity from affecting high-gain circuits.  Worked great and I don't
see why it shouldn't work fine as a soldermask for bare-copper boards.
