Oh yeah!  I actually have a table-top X-Ray Fluorescence analyzer in my lab.
I bought it to take quick measurements of leach residues and solutions
(specifically, nickel in low-grade nickel alloy ores, or "awaruite" ores...
just one of the many fun fun fun things I get up to in my "day" job).  I've
seen the hand-held jobbies... modern prospectors use them to do quick ore
determinations in the field... but I think you have to get up close and
personal with the sample to get a reading.  If the vactrol were potted, a
hand-held XRF may not see the cadmium.
