As far as ready-made optocoupler/LDRs go...

The one I used to use regularly is the H11F3 by Fairchild. The last time I looked there was stock in the US at decent prices - but I haven't seen it available in the UK for many months.

There is also a H11F1 and 2 - I think it's only the maximum resistance that changes (1MOhm, 2MOhm, 3MOhm - if I remember correctly.)

A company called Vactec do/used to do a VTLC5CX that's pretty highly regarded - again, not seen it in the UK for ages.

Pity.
