[sdiy] simple saw or sine osc?

Sine waves are most often used for ring modulation since they contain only the fundamental frequency (ideally), so you get a sideband shift by one specific frequency. Triangle waves could also be used to similar effect.
Saw and square waveforms are less often used when ring modulating as a sound effect (on guitar, vocals, piano..), because you get a sideband shift of each harmonic of the saw/square wave (by superposition) and the result can sound too disorganized and buzzy with many discontinuities. They still work well for oscillator-to-oscillator modulating (in fact many "ring modulators" in synths are just an X-OR function on square waves).
The waveform you want to use really depends on what you're using it for.
