The battery was in fact still good, in that the RAM retained its
content. But it had started leaking.

Apparently, lithium batteries can fail physically before they fail
electrically.

Strangely, the battery voltage display did not always show the
same voltage, sometimes 2.8 V, sometimes 2.9 V, sometimes 3.0 V.
But it had been doing that ever since I bought it, about twenty
years earlier...
